SST: Leechworm by filbarlow SST: Leechworm by filbarlow
This is the design that I did for episode 21 of Starship Troopers: Roughnecks back in 1999 as head designer on the show. It was just an incidental creature, but I've always enjoyed it's design. On any show the scriptwriters would often just write generic word "worms" into their scripts and I would always do something much more interesting. It was colored with markers, and some pencil on a photocopy.

Man starship troopers: Roughnecks was one hell of a show I mean at first I had mix feeling about a tv show from the books, along with the movie but after a while it kind of grows on you. One of those reasons was seeing the world of starship trooper expand more with new settings, weapons, gear, and characters my favorite was seeing new bugs. I loved it when a new episode came out hoping I get to see a new kind of bug type, everyone loved the classic arachnid warrior but favorite's were the Blister bug, impostor bug, and Tanker bug. I got to ask how did you come to the idea of doing this kind of design?

Sorry for the late response. I looked at insects, giant land crabs, crustaceans lots of reference as a starting point. Then I put all that away and played with shapes based off what I had learned, always thinking about structure and movement.

Did you ever had a ruff sketch of one of those drawing you really like but did not think it would get the green light?

I have plenty of designs that were rejected, but most of the time I could redo them until they got approved.

Well, I always do something original, and something that I don't expect. I always take risks and never design the same thing twice. I never do what everyone else does, and always look at nature first. I start with reference and then springboard off that.

You always did an amazing and outstanding job as a designer! You really are full of surprised! And they're very lucky to have you because you are talented! You know what you are doing. Unlike me, I had a very hard time dealing with my boss and client at the same time. Oh well I am not the only one, everybody has to go through with it. Anyway I will keep learning until the end!

Thank you, unfortunately people who know nothing about art become our bosses and like to tell us artists what to do. It's why I don't do commercial work anymore.  My last job had 10 Executive producers who all had to approve every design, none of them had any prior experience in Computer Graphics. I'm glad to be free of it after so many decades.

The only thing that helped me get through it, was that I was improving my craft, I could keep the rejected stuff (which was usually better that what they dumbed the design to), they couldn't do it and could. I finally reached a place where I realized that my role as an artist was to lead non-creatives through their first experiences of art. Through my hand they were brushing up against the creative force that I was channeling, perhaps in some future life their experience with me might inspire them to one day become artists and serve non-creatives themselves.

Yeah nasty looking, but all they could do was drop on things or inch closer like a menacing pillow.

Okay, now I know why I didn't watch that episode, it was farmed out to a studio other than Foundation Imaging and I didn't like the inferior result. I was really disappointed because I was proud of my Firefry and leechworm designs and this studio did an awful job animating them. I wish that all of the episodes could have been done by Foundation Imaging, then it would have been a lot more consistent for you to enjoy.

Yeah, that episode was definitely not the best. My favorites were the ones that made up the Klendathu Campaign, the Imposter bug used in part of that was an awesome design that was really unique and original.

Didn’t know parts of the show got farmed out, that’s always kind of disappointing for artists, I imagine.

Yes, I was very happy with the Imposter Bug design.

I think it was the two asteroid episodes that got farmed out behind my boss' back. He went on holiday and the Sony studio manager gave them to studios owned by her friends, most likely excused as an effort to speed up production, but it was a pretty transparent act of undermining my boss' relationship with Foundation Imaging. The worst part of it was Sony gave out all of the assets that had been developed by Foundation to competing CG studios. I was horrified when it happened, and the results were so bad I didn't want to watch them.

As I've mentioned before there was a lot of childish politics going on at Sony.

Yeah I imagine that and the “Trackers” segment which was pretty much ALL stock footage from the other seasons.

I get the sense that creative work gets put through the meat grinder when it comes to serving corporate interests though....Sony or some other big company owns a franchise, everything else is gravy even though the higher-ups probably never once even watched the show.

Yeah you are pretty close to the truth, it all could have been handled much better. If it had I'd still be at Sony making shows with Foundation Imaging.

Anyway, thanks to you, Helen (who also worked at Sony) and I got hooked watching our SST DVDs, we enjoyed it. So much work went into the shows and they still entertain. We're half way through the "Homefront" arc, which we've never seen before, even though we've had the DVDs all this time. Speaking of people who've never watched the show! :XD:
