The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

While I lived in Los Angeles for fifteen years all of my artwork prior to 1996 had been holed up in a garage back in Australia. I now have my old artwork back with me under one roof, boxes of it. I have original designs from Alf, C.O.P.S, and Geeker. Plus all of my comic art from the original Zooniverse series, including color, and older comic pages that I did for Australian magazines from the 1980s such as Inkspots, Reverie and Breakout.

This means that my publisher Milk Shadow Books now has access to all of my past comic work, and we will work towards reprinting as much as we can, the big project is collecting the entire Zooniverse series and digitally recoloring it into a two hundred page color book. In the meantime my first ZooniMini comic has been printed and launched at the Melbourne Oz Comic Con. I will let you know as soon as it is available online. We are starting work on a second ZooniMini.

Meanwhile I have a new animation on the theme of "play". It features a Voidhauler pilot slurping on his fermented bathwater mixed with Kloob Fluid reciting a poem in gibberish to two puppets. It's simpler if you just take a look.

For more information on the background of the Voidhauler pilot, it's all explained on the Zooniverse Comic blog.

I saw your animation on loopdeloop the other day.....did you do the magnificent voiceover work for that clip? If so I assume that is your real unfiltered voice.

Thanks for taking a look, I have to do the voice acting because I can't afford to pay anyone and I'm free. I usually pitch my voice up or down to suit the character. I never wanted to act, but I've had to step up to the plate and just give it everything I have. The "one" animation I am unhappy with, I only had time to do all of the voices in one take and use what I had. I normally would have worked on making each voice more distinct. Still these loops are just the beginning, I intend to do much more with the assets I am building up. Hopefully I'll be able to pay real actors!

Thanks for the encouragement, while I have an overall story and concept I am working with the monthly challenge is random and I have to work within each topic, which is forcing me to find interesting ways to approach Zooniverse, which keeps it fresh for me.

I am so excited about more Zooniverse comics,as well as, the collected and re-coloring of the old stuff. Although I loved the color on the comics.

What I will be doing with the color for the collection is scanning the original painted art which I now have and using the exact same color in our digital version. But as we originally painted it, not as the printers often screwed it up. You'll see we'll give it lots of love and care!
