XGB: Ep03: Fear Itself by filbarlow XGB: Ep03: Fear Itself by filbarlow
Again this creature was a collaboration between Illustrator Everett Peck, Exec Richard Raynis and myself. He's quite a cute little guy. It's too bad that he was seen for so short a time.

My pencils were inked by Helen Maier back in 1997.

It was interesting to see the entire team get comfortable with the characters from Storyboard Artists to Animators, the early shows have a lot of moments when the artists are settling in to the designs.

I like that his powers where just defensive because he is afraid of everything.

I almost feel sorry for the little guy.  Though I am inclined to say maybe they should have trapped him.  He (and the public for that matter) would have been safer in the ECU.

.. and he would have had more friends, unless he's afraid of ghosts.

Yeah, being one of the first episodes aired, the design of Fear Itself helped hook me into the show. I also like the idea it was just really meek looking and was just territorial, not some standard case of a malignant entity attacking people.

Yeah, a lot of ghosts in RGB and EGB you wish came back like Samhain and Boogieman. At least for Fear Itself, we got to see its Spengler's Spirit Guide file briefly in "Mole People"

Agree.

I still haven't seen that episode, but yeah the prop guys just threw any old character design in there.

What we saw was very memorable though, one of the few "innocent" ghosts in the series, and the idea that an embodiment of fear would be a pitiful, scared little thing is perfect.

Its design always made me think of both a Chihuahua and a bluebottle fly, which is a great formula for a creature you're meant to feel sorry for.

I agree, Richard was really pushing for the pathetic feel of the design.

I always thought it was clever to make Fear's true form to look so pathetic and weak with a hint of cuteness.

Yes it was a nice twist, but paid off with an interesting creature design, which I thought was smart of Richard to push for.

So amazing. I wish it had become a recurring character.

"What's that thing?"
"Oh, that's Fear. Hides under the couch sometimes. Sleeps on Eduardo's head."

Never got to see much of this show when it originally aired, but this guy's been one of my favorites ever since Bogleech featured the episode. You guys did a fantastic job with the design- kind of like the shivering chihuahua version of a Chupacabra. It just looks so pitiful!

Yeah, the episode "Fear itself" was one of my favorites. Really loved the "wtf" feeling about the environnement, reminding me of M.C. Escher works.
It's not often that you see an episode where the fears of each characters are so well represented. I loved Slimer's fear.
Best. Moment. Ever.

Zombie Eduardo was soooooo creepy. As a kid, I thought that was one of the most disturbing moment of XGB, along with the designs of people plagued by Akira in the first two episodes.
