This was the original pitch art that sold Spectrobes. Disney Execs wanted, and I quote, a "Pokemon killer" a game in an Anime style. Helen Maier and I created a game concept that the Disney Execs wanted but it took five years of negotiation with their lawyers before Buena Vista Games (Disney) finally signed the contract and bought the concept from us.
They then handed Spectrobes over to a Japanese Producer, she excluded us from contributing to our own project. Nice.
Originally the game was intended for PS3 and we had it take place on Jeena's homeworld, because she was the main character in our version, we were so horrified that she was stuck in the ship for the entire game!
All that remains of our original concept are the names we invented such as "Spectobes, Rallan, Jeena and the Kroll (changed slightly)". We had a great story with some amazing concept and creature art, none of which was used. Anyway I won't bore you with all the details. In my honest opinion, we all got robbed!
Please don't feel guilty You enjoyed what was given to you. You bonded to what was there, and that is understandable.
Helen and I are the ones who are sorry, you could have had a much richer game to play, the Spectrobes would have been more like pets, much more responsive and interactive. What you played was nothing like what we planned.
We learned from this experience, and we no longer sell our ideas. If you ever get to see our own stories we hope that you'll like them, at least they are exactly as we intended them to be.
Umm... I trained <a href="[link]" target"_blank">Thomas Perkins on Extreme Ghostbusters. He was my second-in-command on Godzilla. I called him in to help me with Character Design on Tutenstein.
Keep in mind that Spectrobes was in development long before Ben 10 was in production. As you can see, this concept artwork predates Ben 10 which aired in 2005.
I know how you feel, Disney takes and uses for it's own gain, I am sorry if i hit any form of nerve but if you would share this info: What exactly made you name the monsters "Spectrobes" ---I ask because when i hear that ame it think of something spooky
Regardless i am a fan and love the series, and would love even more to know how the original concept would've gone.
No it doesn't hit a nerve because I'm still proud of our original concept, and I appreciate you taking an interest, I just hope I don't bore you
In our concept Rallan's race manufactured the Spectrobes by splitting white light into a spectrum of seven colored species. Each colored species were genetically programmed to adapt to different environments. So the name stood for spectrum and I mashed it with the back end of 'microbe' to suggest a synthetic species made of living light.
The idea for Specrobes came from a series of meditations, I was shown images of creatures born from light. There was nothing spooky about our original concept of the Spectrobes.
Yes Rallan's race was very advanced, they created synthetic life and called them Spectrobes which they transported around the galaxy to help colonists who had settled on barren planets. The Spectrobes were seeded over these planets adapting quickly to the conditions of each environment. The colonists now had creatures to share their planets. The Kroll wanted to adapt the Spectrobes to manufacture an army of war monsters. Rallan was simply a delivery boy, bringing Spectrobe seeds to a new distant colony. Rallan was in hibernation when the Kroll attacked his ship which crash landed on a primitive planet. Millions of Specrobe seeds were spread across a planet which already had thriving ecosystems. Rallan remained in hibernation for hundreds of years and the primitives worshiped him as 'the sleeping god' building a temple around his cryopod. The Spectrobes fought the native species for ecological niches and many native species went extinct. Eventually Jeena was born to the Yellow Specrobe clan. She can meditate and see through the eyes of all animals. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she awakens Rallan. He is horrified at the devastation that the Spectrobes have caused. With Jeena's help he attempts to recapture as many Spectrobes as he can. They soon discover a Kroll base, they are also capturing Spectrobes, except the Kroll are mutating them. Rallan learns that the Kroll enslaved his race. So he and Jeena must free his people, and stop the Kroll while capturing Spectrobes to help them.
And there you have it, the story that Helen Maier and I developed and pitched to Disney.
But...now I feel even worse! I really liked the games they gave us! The Spectrobes looked really cool in my opinion.
I'm sorry. ;-;

So yes there is a link.

(That also helps me get rid of the spooky feeling.)
Am i to guess that the technology in your original design runs on light?
That all said, I would love to know as much as possible about the original material.
