Godzilla Ep103: Nanotech Creature 01 by filbarlow Godzilla Ep103: Nanotech Creature 01 by filbarlow
Our third Godzilla episode featured one of the most difficult monsters to design because it changed it's appearance from shot to shot. I asked the episode's Director Tim Eldred to visually summarize what he needed in as few designs as possible. I ended up supplying NINE different creature designs based off the storyboards, but Tim requested more, I appreciated his organizational skills but I was running out of time, and the designs were becoming increasingly complex taking longer to draw. I had to put my foot down and move on to the next show, so the hydroplaning version ended up being done by someone else, or taken directly from Tim's sketches. It turned out pretty well.

Amorphous creatures are just a headache and it's still a pain, I've recently scanned all of my designs, and have begun coloring two other versions, and simply got bored figuring out the stripes. So I figured I might as well show you this and move onto the next creature.

Damn, this one was just really hard to look at when animated due to the stripes undulating constantly.
Creative idea, sure, but really difficult to see dimension.

Yeah the plan was to make children suffer unnecessarily. You can blame the Director, I was following his design.

Yay! More GTS art! This guy was, and still is, a very interesting machine.

Yes and he made Godzilla look like he was wearing stripey pajamas.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that lol! I forgot who it functioned. I know it was made to eat garbage so it got bigger the more it ate?

The stripes really help to define the weird shapes.  Is this based on those poisonous sea slugs with the bright warning colors?

As I mentioned in the above comment the Director had my hands tied, it was his idea to do the stripes, in the larger model designs I did my best to play them down, hoping to make life easier for the animators. However they seem to prefer the stripes as it made tracking easier so they were featured more than I was expecting. The color department was responsible for the choice of color of the creature, again out of my hands. Sadly no existing creature was referenced all I could do was follow the Directors lead on this episode.

That was one of the more odd monster of the show in my book

It's not my favorite either, the design process was largely taken out of my hands, as I was forced to follow the Director's lead. There is a secret monster in this show, the Nano-machine itself, which only appears as a silhouette.  I was (and am) so in love with my Nano-machine sketch that if I ever show it, I will do so separately from Godzilla, seeing as it was technically unused, freeing me from legalities.

I can distinctly recall the nano-machine silhouette and how elaborate it was!

We watched the ep yesterday, and they do show it in slightly clearer detail later on in, in a computer simulation. Towards the end, the nanotech mass also appears to be forming a head based on the actual nanobots; was that one of your ideas you sketched? It was quite cool either way.

The later designs in the show either came from the Prop Department, or from the Directors notes and the Storyboards. I didn't have much to do with how it ended up, I had another show to get on with.

For me I like the idea of nano machiens just that having them eat to grow seem a bit silly , seeing as how they had to just keep it away from the city but hey got to do what the director says right

you know the look of how the monsters looks were one of the things I had problems with was that episode where earth under attack by aliens I notes not a lot of the monsters Godzilla fought were use even the ones he didn't kill but damage

Firstly it was from the script, then the Director came to me with his sketches of what he wanted the creature to look like and then I did my best to make the final design look cool.

This happens to be the only episode of that show I can remember seeing. Amorphous creatures are always fascinating and this critter definitely stuck out in my memory.

Tim Eldred, the Director deserves most of the credit, I was largely following his sketches and his crew's storyboards.

Need to get back to rewatching this show since its on Netflix. Though one thing I am curious, the Female French agent, was she put into the group so that Sony wouldn't have to pay... uh, whats his name from the film whose name I can't remember right now?

Also, can we get more Godzilla 1998 TAS Art put up? I love this stuff!

Jean Reno? I did a caricature of him, as the character Phillipe Roache. In the show, he assigns Monique to the team. Elsie was the problem character for the actor's likeness. I'll explain that at some point in the future.

I'm doing these in order so El Gusano is the one I'm coloring at the moment.

Yeah Jean Reno, that is who I was talking about! Otherwise, neat! Can't wait to read what you have to say on that, loving the production notes you post up with this stuff.

One of the best episodes of the series, I love the monster, how the lines seemed to ripple across it like a stone dropped into the pond, how its color was such a contrast to Godzilla. I just really liked this one.

I'm amazed that the lines worked out, I just hope that the animators survived this episode.
