Godzilla Ep103: Nanotech Creature 01 by filbarlow Godzilla Ep103: Nanotech Creature 01 by filbarlow
Our third Godzilla episode featured one of the most difficult monsters to design because it changed it's appearance from shot to shot. I asked the episode's Director Tim Eldred to visually summarize what he needed in as few designs as possible. I ended up supplying NINE different creature designs based off the storyboards, but Tim requested more, I appreciated his organizational skills but I was running out of time, and the designs were becoming increasingly complex taking longer to draw. I had to put my foot down and move on to the next show, so the hydroplaning version ended up being done by someone else, or taken directly from Tim's sketches. It turned out pretty well.

Amorphous creatures are just a headache and it's still a pain, I've recently scanned all of my designs, and have begun coloring two other versions, and simply got bored figuring out the stripes. So I figured I might as well show you this and move onto the next creature.

Yay! More GTS art! This guy was, and still is, a very interesting machine.

Yes and he made Godzilla look like he was wearing stripey pajamas.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that lol! I forgot who it functioned. I know it was made to eat garbage so it got bigger the more it ate?

The stripes really help to define the weird shapes.  Is this based on those poisonous sea slugs with the bright warning colors?

As I mentioned in the above comment the Director had my hands tied, it was his idea to do the stripes, in the larger model designs I did my best to play them down, hoping to make life easier for the animators. However they seem to prefer the stripes as it made tracking easier so they were featured more than I was expecting. The color department was responsible for the choice of color of the creature, again out of my hands. Sadly no existing creature was referenced all I could do was follow the Directors lead on this episode.

That was one of the more odd monster of the show in my book

It's not my favorite either, the design process was largely taken out of my hands, as I was forced to follow the Director's lead. There is a secret monster in this show, the Nano-machine itself, which only appears as a silhouette.  I was (and am) so in love with my Nano-machine sketch that if I ever show it, I will do so separately from Godzilla, seeing as it was technically unused, freeing me from legalities.

I can distinctly recall the nano-machine silhouette and how elaborate it was!
