Godzilla Ep102: Giant Squid by filbarlow Godzilla Ep102: Giant Squid by filbarlow
This is the original production art of the Giant Squid for the animated Godzilla TV show back in 1998. I was the Head Designer of the Character Design Department on that show at Columbia-Tristar (Sony) and designed all of the creatures.

This image includes instructions on how to handle the tentacles for the Storyboard Artists, Directors in LA and Animators overseas.

Inking duties on this art were shared with Helen Maier.

I thought those killer squids were pretty neat when I first saw them as a kid back in the day, but C-Rex was of course even cooler once the big reveal was made that he was the real top predator in those waters XD.

BTW, sorry to bother you with this, but why were the squid's ink referred to as tar in the series? Just to drive home the idea that C-Rex could devour highway tar as a substitute for his usual food or was the ink really more like tar than normal squid ink? Sorry, I love chatting about monsters & how their weird biology works lol.

I liked drawing these guys.
You are perfectly correct about ink, but it was up to the writers to figure all that out. It's been so long that I'd have to see the episode again to see what you mean.
And you aren't bothering me at all, happy to help figure this stuff out if I know the answer.

Yeah one of the details I needed to be clear on. I had to think about the artists down the line. The animators could have driven themselves crazy drawing suckers all over the place, which might pop on and off in animation, then the Directors would ask for recalls, costing the Korean studio time and money. Plus I was trying to cut back work for them, because they were paid by the drawing. Just things I had to consider.

I was always in conflict because Richard wanted more detail and I was always trying to cut it back for the rest of the crew. Once we did CG shows. like SST, I felt better about detailed creatures. Once the mesh was built and the textures were done the rest was animation.

Honestly, I had never watched any classic Godzilla movies when I worked on the animation. I had no interest in them and I never grew up watching them. As a kid growing up in the 60's my parents wouldn't let me watch the commercial channels, which occasionally aired Godzilla movies. I've only seen a part of a Mothra film a few years back and that's it. Instead I read books, comics and studied photos of animals. Any creature that I design is always based on my knowledge of the natural world, unlike many designers I don't guess, I look at reference. Nature is a better designer than me, so I've studied it my whole life.
