Godzilla #102: C-Rex 3Q Back by filbarlow Godzilla #102: C-Rex 3Q Back by filbarlow
Here is the three-quarter reverse view of the original production design I did of the C-Rex a monster in the Godzilla Animated TV show.

I inked this one myself, but you can still see some of the blue and purple pencil lines that I didn't erase properly.

I've always been intrigued by the Crustaceous Rex's design, probably because it just looks so different from so many other Kaiju. I particularly liked the 4 folds (I think that's what those are) of its mouth.

Since you designed the Crustaceous Rex, I gotta ask, what exactly is this thing? I assume it's some sort of crustacean given it's name. But to me, it looks more like a heavily mutated squid (or at least one that was bigger and more mutated than the smaller ones that the Rex fed upon). It's body looks like a squid mantle, while its legs are just it's elongated tentacles modified to enable it to walk. The other tentacles appear sorted over its body.

Thats what I think it is anyway. But if I'm wrong, feel free to tell what the Crustaceous Rex really is. As I've been wondering for years just what this creature is, and would love to finally know. :)

I've been trying to figure out what you mean by "4 folds", I've been counting everything too.

It's a mix, part baleen whale, part ankylosaurus, part nudibranch, and part caterpillar. There was a caterpillar I used to find as a kid in Australia that is in there. I don't see them anymore unfortunately. I have so many animals in my subconscious that they are easy to mix and match. The trick is to make it work as a whole.

I see the C-Rex as something that would be more comfortable underwater but flops around on land, like a beached whale, heaven forbid.
I hope that helps :)

First off, thank you so much for responding! And yes it does help out a lot. :D

Secondly, sorry if I couldn't describe them better. I was talking about the 4 mouthlike parts that split apart when everCrustaceous Rex roars.
Here's an image from an episode to better depict when I'm talking about. vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/g…

Whoa, I was way off. That is one extremely creative mix! I can sort of see how it'd be part caterpillar, sea slug and baleen whale (from the way you described how it moves on land), but what about the ankylosaur? I'm not entirely seeing it.

I also believe myself to be good at creating creatures that are mixes of other animals (living or extinct). But I gotta ask, how do you manage to mix a sea slug, caterpillar, baleen whale, and dinosaur altogether and make into something truly unique like the C-Rex? How are you able to make these completely different things come together and work as a whole? I'd really love to know. ^_^

Wait, I'm sorry I got things mixed up. For some reason I thought you were talking about this guy. That's the trouble when I'm answering notifications, must have got mixed up with someone elses' comment. My deepest apologies.
Godzilla: Ep104 El Gusano: Model 01 by filbarlow
Now I understand the 4 mouth parts. Okay, let's try that again... You were correct the C-Rex, was partly based off a squid, have you seen a vampire octopus? The rest is a bit of a jumble and not clearly any particular animal, sort of elephant, beetle, ankylosaurus again. Sorry to set you off on the wrong direction. I hope this helps :)

That's totally fine. Happens to me as well every now and again.

So El Gusano is the one with the design that's based off a sea slug, caterpillar, ankylosaur, and beached whale? I can totally see that.

Oh, so the C-Rex is actually partly based off a squid. Awesome. :D

Haha, I just realized that you are the same person I was mixing up with the El Gusano post, that's probably why, same icon. Anyway, you were correct C-Rex is partly squid, on legs :)

Godzilla: the Series was one of my favorite animated TV shows from my childhood and C-Rex was one of my favorite monsters in it.

His design really pushed the boundaries of how kaiju could go from looking like a man in a rubber suit to something more unnatural which was something I really liked about the ones in the show because they had a wide variety of body shapes to make them unique.

I always wondered how the design for the Crackler came about?

Yeah, it's animation, we can do anything.

The Crackler? I sketched around, as usual, until something looked interesting and then kept going. The creature designs usually had one rough which was changed only if someone above me didn't like it. We had a week to design each show, so I didn't have any time to muck around.

That's why I prefer animation over live action most of the time.

Did you have any references when you sketched the monsters or did they just come from your mind?

It's interesting that the Crackler came from sketching because since it came from Walker's subconscious, there's really no limits to what it could look like, given how dreams operate differently from reality.

When I look at the Crackler again, it moves its biggest arms like a gorilla while its smaller legs and exoskeleton-like shape looked like those from beetles.

It was really cool that you combined both aspects of those animals into something unique.

You mentioned in an older comment that you envisioned C-Rex's tail as being able to move independently like an insect's abdomen, does that mean it could have used that spike at the end like a stinger? Or just raise its shell in a threat display or something?

I just wanted it to have some flexibility not be rigid, it was up to the storyboard artists to take advantage of the stinger that I included in the design.

C-rex is a favorite of mine, such a beautiful and memorable design...like a squid who adapted into a bipedal form, though with its beautiful four-petaled mouth it reminds me as much of an annelid or nematode as a mollusk.

Matthew Thompson the Head Character Designer on MIB was an employees from my Australian company. He was part of my team that was brought to LA from Australia to work for Columbia-Tristar, and he did a wonderful job.

I did one alien design for MIB. The other designs, such as humans and most of the main title were handled by Miguelanxo Prado from Spain, a brilliant artist.

C-Rex's armored back was always one of those little details I loved but didn't get to see much in the show. It gave him a nice feeling of broadness that contrasted the silt-y legs and made him look nice and big. I was always hoping in his episodes that we'd get to see him use it to defend himself, but oh well. It also reminds me (really vaguely) of Varan's from Toho's Godzilla series, so to me at least it always felt like an appropriate feature for a Godzilla monster.

Yeah it's quite a different creature from the back, I was debating whether or not to show this view. I decided it warranted being seen. I always saw the tail like an insect's abdomen able to move independently from the chest, which would be more maneuverable than if it had a spinal chord.

That definitely makes sense, it's a shame we didn't get to see that kind of movement in the show.
