Godzilla #102 C-Rex by filbarlow Godzilla #102 C-Rex by filbarlow
Here is a scan of the original production design I did for the C-Rex a monster in the Godzilla Animated TV show.

You can still see some of my blue underdrawing that didn't get properly erased. I shared inking duties with Helen Maier , that's her handwriting on the title and mine on "original" on the top left. I wrote that so that the art assistants didn't hand it out as a photocopy.

I remember when I first started watching the show, and I saw C-Rex for the first time I was going to enjoy the show. your monster designs are epic. :D
I can't help but wonder what the inspiration for that mouth was. it reminds me of a lamprey sea star hybrid. also i think there's a monster that's a bit of an homage to C-Rex in the first of the new star trek movies www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ECsW0…

I had the vampire squid floating around in the back of my head. Yeah I felt deja vu while watching that sequence. It might simply be coincidence that the creatures have a similar feel. The designer talks about it here: www.awn.com/vfxworld/creature-…

Very cool scan, C-Rex was one of my favorite monsters from the show, such a unique design, glad he became a recurring beastie. Also glad you guys named him, I find that the properly named monsters tended to be the most memorable, Cryptoclidus, The Crackler, Dragma, Seigo, Ice-borer, the Lizard Slayers etc. How did you come up with the name for him?

Honestly, I'd love to see this guy return to fight Godzilla in the movies someday, or the IDW comics at least.

C-Rex was named in the script that way, the writers came up with the names.

Despite looking barely like a crustacean somehow it was the first thing that popped into my head when I first saw this beast. I don't even remember how I picked up on the name "Crustaceous Rex" as a child, I suppose it was intuition.

BTW did you also design the later mutations like the flying ice-breathing manta ray and the thorny devil? I think those monsters are pretty cool and I don't see enough fan art of them.

The characters might have mentioned it in the dialogue, perhaps picked up on that?

I designed all of the monsters in Godzilla, I intend to post them all, I just don't have much time to color them at the moment.

I've rewatched the whole series recently. The name doesn't show up.

Thinking back on it, I think I made it up because I was also watching Spongebob at the time and there was that episode where the King Jellyfish shows up and that cucumber guy says "Cnidaria rex". I read a lot of books as a kid so I actually understood what that meant, and I think I might've applied that quote to C-Rex.

Perhaps my favourite bugger foe from the series! Absolutely love him, his flower-opening mouth, eyes, tentacles, enormous limbs for locomotion... wondrous design.
A question: it is a widespread thought that C. Rex was based on Ebirah. Is that true?

Based on Ebirah? Absolutely not true. It came from a rough sketch from one of my employees, Dan Remmel or Matt Brady which I reworked for the main title. None of us were even talking about the old Godzilla movies which I doubt any of us had seen, and honestly this lobster creature is a new one to me. I had the guys go nuts and design a whole bunch of monsters for me pick and rework the best.

Thanks for the very interesting BTS fact! I asked because since some monsters are seemingly based on the old series foes (like Cyber Godzilla), people over the internet saw patterns everywhere. I in fact could not believe C.Rex was in any way related to Ebirah.
Again thanks for clearing that out. You're so kind to answer all my pestering questions. :D

I don't mind answering any questions, I'm happy to clear things up for you. It's just a bit embarrassing to admit that I worked on the Godzilla animated show even though I've never watched one Godzilla movie.

Oh don't worry. In all honesty I can tell you, besides the remake, the Godzilla films that are *really* worth a look are pretty small in number. Like 7 or 8.

Probably my favorite creature from the show, especially his crazy mouth and belly tentacles.

Yeah he was jointly designed by myself and my creative crew of employees back in Australia, I can't quite remember who was involved. I think Matthew Brady and Dan Remmel. We threw designs back and forth then I made the final call with this design.
