Captain N: GameBoy Designs by filbarlow Captain N: GameBoy Designs by filbarlow
I was digging around in my tubs of old designs and I found these sketches from 1990 that I'd forgotten all about. There was a faded fax accompanying the art, where I was asked by a couple of DiC Producers to do the initial designs for the Game Boy character on the animated show Captain N (Dated 14th Feb 1990). I'm not a fan of turning inanimate objects into characters but I gave it my best to give life to a product.

Nintendo made no contact with me, so I was free to throw my own ideas out there.

And all of them look far better than what they went with.

These are incredible designs!  Very lively!  I like how you tried more than one new thing with each design

Thank you it would have been a fun little show with lots of monsters, glad that you picked up on my intention in the designs :)

Good grief was there not a cartoon from my formative years that you didn't have a hand it? :)

There were a lot of shows that I didn't work on, but they probably weren't up to much.

Why is there a 1990 copyright year on the sketches with the title "Captain Nintendo" when the series was renamed Captain N prior to airing in 1989?

Also, was DiC really thinking of adding Gameboy to the series baak in 1989?

I never saw the show, I just assumed everyone was abbreviating Nintendo to N, so it didn't matter either way. The name on this post came off my file which was called CaptainN for short, so I kept it to save space. I guess that having Nintendo in the title would have been a problem legally, so they made it N.

I have a fax, (very faded) that is dated Feb 14th 1990 from Ken Ito, one of the Producers at DiC, asking me to work on Captain N. I checked my dairy from the same year and on the night of the 16th of Feb I designed and faxed the sketches posted here. That is all I know.

... also I've changed the name in the sketch description above to Captain N which is the name used in the fax, and added the date. The only reason I've been using the full name is due to habit, so I'll happily fix any inconsistencies.

I love F2s big derpy toothy grin. It's one thing to just make some cutesy character to appeal to children and sell toys, but that particular design is very interesting and memorable to me. Kinda reminds me of courage (the Cowardly Dog) he had some ugly teath but that never stopped me from loving the character.

Yeah I'm a big fan of characters being imperfect, that an "ugly" character can be loveable and cute. I've always fought against perfect "good looking" characters, I celebrate imperfection.

"I'm not a fan of turning inanimate objects into characters but I gave it my best to give life to a product."  I had a feeling you'd say something like that. :) I don't think there was any way to make this character work.

All of these were shown on the DVD set as well as two more as part of a special edition.  It's neat to see these in better resolution, though.  Gotta agree on the character ... didn't really work.

Thank you for the link, if you look closely at the little scribble to the right of some of the sketches above, there is my "FIL" signature that I hid on every page that I faxed. The signature on A2 made it to the DVD. I only did the designs shown here, the other images on the DVD were done by other artists which I saw for the first time on your site.

These are actually cute, likeable designs. Like everyone else is saying, the one they used in the show was just creepy and dumb looking in comparison. I think I like the A's here myself, and B is pretty cute.

The last one looks like it was possesed by some ghost hehe.(f2) Your renditions of him are more animated then what they used. I watched that show so much.

I envisioned a much more fun show, but it became awkward and the characters were stiff and made me cringe.

It would be based off Captain N, not Buddy Boy. This is just one of those divergent "could have been" moments in animation design.

I like the first design and the last one looks like a raving rabbit to me.

I think using R.O.B. the Robot would had more sense story wise but I understand why they picked the gameboy, even if they didn't do it very well.

Yeah the big milk teeth (the rabbits aren't a very original design).

The whole show was a Nintendo advert, they didn't need to put the devices into it. Overkill.

The 'A' designs are the most endearing to me, and way more creative and interesting than what they eventually settled on in the cartoon itself. Probably for the best, seeing how disliked he become by fans.

I don't like turning inanimate objects into characters either, unless there's a good story reason behind it, or I can go more monstrous with the idea, than simple 'mascot' aesthetics.

Can I just say; I disliked how it turned out, even more I hated that it was even in the show, what a dumb idea.
However, I contributed in some minor way. I did what the client wanted, because it's what the client wanted.

Well, there goes my attempts at being positive.

But joke aside, I totally agree, that character designs like this one feel cheap and wrong, like a movie made less with creative story tellers, than it was with a marketing comity.

On the bright side however, you helped design and create a number of far more beloved and unique creature characters, so GameBoy is a minor folly in-my-opinion.
