5 Day Class: Mutortoise by filbarlow 5 Day Class: Mutortoise by filbarlow
Here is the first result from the 5 Day Class that I've been offering here on DA. This design is the result of a collaboration between myself and Dennis Culver. You can see more of Mutortoise in the comic Edison Rex which Dennis is the artist on.

Thanks for working with me and best of luck with your book Dennis!

See Dennis Culver's DA page here.

It is the Son of the Arctic Turtle from "Godzilla the Animated Series!

Joking aside, this is a pretty fearsome looking turtle monster, and hopefully he'll have a significant appearance in the aforementioned comic. As opposed to getting a cameo like most American comics monsters, where a superhero gives a single fatal punch to the face, and it's all disappointingly over.

Sorry to sound negative, but I really love you creature designs!

I'm glad that you like it!

Yes it never lasts long enough. If I had my way I'd make a show that would only be about the monsters and the humans are barely noticed, just annoying little insects.

I'm a big fan of the Toho Godzilla movies of the 1960's, which mixed likable, or at least interesting human subplots with the imaginative, often character driven giant monsters themselves. It never went into the oddball extremes of having the beasts themselves talk outright, like the otherwise fun Marvel Monster comics of the same era, but there was clear personalities in those rubber suited monsters. Particularly "War of the Gargantuas", "King Kong Escapes" and "Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster".

Nobody really does this sort of thing anymore, especially in human-centric Hollywood blockbusters, but your concept of extreme monster focusing is quite cool, and I wouldn't mind giving such a watch / read. Now no one's done that at all, to the best of my knowledge.

By-the-way, I'm the co-founder of :iconkaijuden: and thank you for allowing us to feature your official "Godzilla and "Starship Trooper" creature designs!

Thank you for featuring my work on your Kaijuden group :)

Obviously the genre is pretty established, mutant giant creature causes destruction but humanity prevails. So I'll just leave it alone and do my own stories and ideas.

Yeah, is is pretty well established, but again, most examples from the giant monster genre tend to be too human concentric, while the said monsters take a back seat and related screen time in turn.

So something that tries to balance out that problem, or told from the monster's point of view without going into 'Disney-style' anthropomorphism would still be unique.

But this aside, after getting a reply from you, and seeing how many of your character designs made it into actual television shows, I've decided to create a new folder / sub-gallery for Kaijuden for professional and published artwork, to separate the accomplished items (from small press to production companies), from the unpublished fan art.

A Disney musical about misunderstood giant monsters, I can see that happening. :/

I will eventually post more for Godzilla, just swamped at the moment.

Oh, dude, take you sweet time! Anything you allow us to feature on the group is awesome as it is.

Although, I'd recommend any designs you might have done for El Gusano Gingante, AKA the Giant Worm.

In case you didn't know, he seems to be the biggest favorite among Japanese giant monster fans from that cartoon series.

Even I couldn't resist paying homage to the big grub here: [link]

I want to post them sequentially so the El Gusano will be one of the first. He's in the pile to scan.

I read your page and found it very interesting and informed. Just so you understand a bit more about it's design, I never even thought to do a worm. I grew up in love with our native Australian caterpillars, this is one I saw regularly in my suburb: [link]

So I've always added lots of weird protrusions to my "worms" as a result.

Thats a shame. Its probably due to the fact that your not very well known. I bet if you go around and way your Hollywood stuff in popular places, more will bite

Yes I do occasionally. However I'm sort of done with Hollywood now, I'm more interested in my new work on my own projects rather than looking back too much. I just want people to know about the work I did. :)
