Creator of Zooniverse, took a detour through Hollywood for a few decades, now what was I doing?
A few months ago I mentioned a project that I've been working on in this earlier Journal Entry. It's a project called 8House devised by Brandon Graham to be published later in the year by Image Comics. 8House is an overall concept from which various Creator-Owned titles will be released by other artists and writers.

Helen Maier and I have called our comic series 8House: Yorris we are writing it together and I'm doing the art. We created this project with all of you in mind. We thought it would be fun to re-imagine our entire animation career, mash all of the shows that you know and love into one big project, blending them into a new, but familiar style, and using old school inking with steel nibs and brushes, the same way I made comics back in the 80s.

We have been having a great time working on it, and I'm designing brand new creatures and characters. It has been refreshing to run with any conceptual idea that interests us, without any studio bosses to hold us back! This is our baby, and we are pulling out all of the stops! So if you are a fan, or friend, of the shows that we worked on in our long careers, there will be something for you, Bugs, Ghosts, Monsters, Kaiju, Aliens, Mummies, even Zombies, we've got you covered. Speaking of which, here is a  sneak peek at the cover that I finished last week:

SST: Leechworm by filbarlow
SST: Leechworm
This is the design that I did for episode 21 of Starship Troopers: Roughnecks back in 1999 as head designer on the show. It was just an incidental creature, but I've always enjoyed it's design. On any show the scriptwriters would often just write generic word "worms" into their scripts and I would always do something much more interesting. It was colored with markers, and some pencil on a photocopy.

XGB Ep03: Biker Ghost by filbarlow
XGB Ep03: Biker Ghost
This was one of my favorite designs that I did for the Extreme Ghostbusters animated show. I had a lot of fun drawing a portly biker let alone a ghost Hells Angel. I did it while still in Australia during preproduction, my team hadn't flown out yet. Due to standards and practices I had to remove his tummy tattoo, but this is the original sketch. As always Helen Maier  inked my pencils. I didn't like the way this model was colored by the Color Department, which was done in Los Angeles, so I never got to see his finished model . I've recolored him the way I wanted him to look, not how you saw him on TV.

EDIT: The number #103 is the show number. This was the third show that we worked on in production, these numbers may differ from the order that they aired.

Godzilla Ep106: Giant Rat, Model #1 by filbarlow
Godzilla Ep106: Giant Rat, Model #1
This is the first Giant Rat design I did for the Production of the 1998 Animated Godzilla TV show, there were 3 in all. Typically, the writers quickly ran out of ideas and started going down the list of vermin to enlarge to face off against Godzilla and the team. So I did my best to make the rats progressively more interesting, starting with regular rats as my reference for this first stage, I set about making them huge and grotesque.

:iconhelenmaier: Helen Maier helped me ink this design back in 1998, she wrote notes in the bottom right for the departments that were next in line, like the Colorists, Timers, and Translators to make sure that this model was used in the correct scenes based off the storyboards. Sometimes the storyboards were drawn by so many different artists that the creature designs would appear different from scene to scene, we had to make sure that there would be no confusion further down the line as to which rat model would be used in which scene. Traditionally it should have been a job for the Directors, but well..

Also because we were still in secrecy mode the show was called "Heat Seekers" not "Godzilla" that is why you see "HS" before the episode number "#106", shows always began at 100, just in case earlier shows were called for. They never were.

My NEW comic is out and you can only get it from me, it won't be available in stores!

This issue #15 is called "Kick off" because it reboots my comic career. I'm starting with an origin story, how the Zooniverse was made. So if you enjoyed the work I did for your favorite TV shows in the past, this is your chance to read my own personal project, this is what I do with the shackles off, without a big studio holding me back.

I've shown you how versatile my art styles are, now here's your chance to see my own personal style, this is what I do in my prime of my artistic abilities.

There are no middlemen/women what you buy helps me directly, your support helps me create more comics!
Help me make the comics I've always wanted the world to see!

Hello Mr. Fil Barlow, I am a HUGE fan of your work! :praiseme:

I first got into your work when watching Godzilla the Series. I am just in love with the beastly designs you gave to the monsters on the show! You really did a great job! (Sorry if I'm sounding like an overhype fangirl right now).:squee:

Just wanted to take the chance to compliment you, good sir. I am a huge Godzilla fan, and I loved watching Godzilla the Series every Saturday morning when I was a kid. I still watch it now! XD
You did some great designs for that show, Mr. Barlow! Keep up the good work! Cutie Thumbs Up

P.S. I don't know if you take questions at all. But I just have to know, how did you come up with the monster designs for Godzilla the series?  Feel free to answer if you want. Please

Wow, to think i find the talented artist behind the designs of all the beastly monsters, ghost busted ghosts, and unforgettable characters to my favorites shows I grew up watching during the 80's, 90's and then some. You're EPIC!
